Chapter 1

How do I find free Web space?Finding free Web space is easy. Here are some of the larger web page providers below, there are more but these are the most well known. I have heard many complaints about Angelfire. I have never used it, but people have a hard time running scripts on their pages when they use Angelfire. When you get your account set up with your provider, you can choose an advanced editor or basic editor. It would be better to choose the advanced editor because it gives you more freedom to make your page look the way you want it to look.

  • Yahoo/Geocities

  • Angelfire

  • My Family.com

  • Virtual Avenue

    How do I get my page listed in search engines?In order to get your page listed in most engines, you need to have meta tags on your page. A meta tag is something that lets people know what is on your page, and gives keywords about your site so the search engines know what's on your page. For example:

    <META NAME="keywords" content="html tutorial,html,web page, free guest books, free counters, kids,children,resources,design,home page,html help">

    <META NAME="description" content="HTML help and web page design for kids and beginners in an easy to understand format, web page resources including free guest books, free counters and free web space."

    You put these tags in between the and tags. Keep the description short, and don't use too many keywords. In order to be listed you don't need to pay lots of money. You just need to go right to the search engine's main page and look for a link that says "add URL" or "suggest a site." Just click on the link and it will give you directions on how to fill out the form. Not all of the search engines index pages with meta tags, but it is a very good idea to have them on your page. Yahoo and Yahooligans are the hardest engines to get listed with. Other popular search engines include Google, Mamma, Dogpile, Altavista, MSN, and Lycos.

    How can I keep myself safe online?Online safety is so important for kids. There are a few things you can remember that will help you stay safe:

  • Never give out your password to anyone, not even your best friend! Most internet service providers will not ask for your password, and your parents should always decide whether or not they really need to give it out.

  • Never tell anyone your name, your address, your telephone number or any other personal information about yourself unless you have permission from your parents first. You never know who you're talking to for real, even if you think you do.

  • Never agree to meet an online friend without permission from a parent. If you get permisssion your parent should come with you and you should meet in a public area.

  • Parents should always surf with you, but if they don't and you find yourself somewhere online that makes you uncomfortable, just leave!

  • Never respond to someone who is sending you threatening messages. Tell your parents and let them deal with it. Responding to them just makes them do it even more. You can report harassment at your internet service provider.

  • If someone that you don't know sends you an attached file, link in an e-mail, link in an instant message or picture on an e-mail, don't open it. If you recieve a trojan. Your whole computer will crash and your parents will not be very happy!

  • Never send a picture of yourself to anyone without checking with your parents first to see if it's ok.
